What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Also known as median nerve compression, carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition causing numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand.

The median nerve that runs along the length of the arm through a passage in the wrist is called the carpal tunnel. The carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when this nerve is pinched.

The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome are:

  • Burning, tingling, itching or numbness in your palm or any of the fingers
  • Weakness in hand and inability to hold on to objects.
  • Shock-like feelings that move into fingers.
  • Tingling that moves up into the arm.

You may find that your hands will go numb during the night and shaking them at night will help get rid of the tingling and numbness. However, as the condition worsens, you may find it tougher and tougher to maintain the grip on the objects.

Diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome at Eravio

At Eravio Hospital, the doctors will discuss with you the entire history surrounding the pain. They will also perform the Tinel’s sign test. In this test, the doctor will lightly tap over the pain point. If the nerve is indeed damaged or affected, then you will experience a tingling sensation outward. This sensation is also known as paresthesia.

At Eravio Hospital, the doctors will recommend Low-level Laser Therapy (LLLT) for treating carpal tunnel syndrome. It is a non-invasive therapy that effectively controls carpal tunnel syndrome allowing you to resume your daily routine with a new zest.

The procedure for LLLT for carpal tunnel syndrome is as follows: /p>

  • The doctor places infra-red laser diode powered at low intensity (980 nm) at the affected nerve on the arm.
  • The photons from the laser energy enter the mitochondria of the cells in the affected tissue.
  • The energy from the photons powers the mitochondria, allowing them to heal themselves. This reduces the inflammation and the resulting pain.
