Advance Care Centre For SUI
What is Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI)?
Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is the unintentional leakage of urine due to any physical activity such as laughing, cycling, coughing and so on. As opposed to the myth, SUI is not related to psychological stress at all.
Another myth related to SUI is that it is caused due to aging. However, SUI affects at least 10-20% of women irrespective of their age. As a result of this condition, women often feel embarrassed and may want to be isolated from their friends. This condition also causes the women’s intimate relationships to suffer.
But SUI should no longer be a major issue as there are simple effective treatment options available.
What symptoms & causes SUI?
- The most common causes for Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) in women are:
- Pregnancy : Short term cause and problem could be solved once the child is born. During pregnancy, the pelvic floor weakens due to the growing weight of the baby and the hormonal changes.
- Childbirth : Sometimes the problem continues because of the strain on the pelvic floor. Childbirth can cause problems if there is a prolonged pregnancy or if the child is too big. Also, forceps and ventouse-assisted deliveries may risk the damage of the bladder weakness.
- Menopause : Body goes through a change and the hormones – estrogen, in particular – change, therefore causing bladder control. Sometimes, women may notice a weaker bladder than normal a week before a period. This is because the pelvic floor becomes weaker bladder than normal in a week before a period.
Other Cause Include :
- Obesity
- Chronic cough
- Constipation
- Genetically inherited factors
- History of pelvic surgery
- Smoking
There are also certain long-term causes of incontinence, such as :
- Pelvic floor disorder
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Multiple Sclerosis
How does Eravio diagnose SUI?
- The most important symptom of SUI is leakage of urine during any activity causing abdominal pressure. There are various levels of severity of SUI:
- Mild : Leakage of urine only during forceful activities such as exercise, sneeze, laugh, cough, or lift something heavy.
- Moderate/Severe : Leakage of urine during even less strenuous activities such as standing or bending over.
At the first instance of such leakage, consult your doctor for relief. If primary medication does not offer relief, then contact the specialists at Eravio for expert advice and further treatment.
The doctors may first ask you to undergo a few tests such as:
- Physical exam: Rectal exam and pelvic exam
- Urine sample test: infection, traces of blood or other abnormalities
- Neurological exam: for any pelvic nerve problems
- Urinary stress test: Testing urine loss when you cough or bear down
